California Climate Activities Sep 8 to Sep 14

by Bruce Naegel

Governor Brown carries on a tradition to work at the sub-national level on climate change when work at the national level breaks down. The latest chapter in the sub-national story is the Global Climate Action Summit. This is in San Francisco on September 12-14. (1). While the main events are reserved for the participants, there are many associated events (2).

On Saturday September 8, a host of sustainability and related groups came together in a parade from the Embarcadero to the Civic Center.  There were at least 10,000 and possibly as many as 30,000 people in the parade. (3)  Faith Based communities were well represented. This was a prelude to the Global Climate action Summit on Sep 12-14.

Governor Brown signed two important bills on September 8, AB 1775, and SB 834 (4). These bills block oil drilling off the California coast by blocking building oil pipelines.

On Monday September 10, Governor Brown issued Executive Order

B-55-18 (5).  This document states California must be carbon neutral by 2045.

On Monday September 10, Governor Brown signed SB 100. This is the bill that specifies California needs to be at 100% carbon free electricity by 2045. It is a prerequisite for the Executive order B-55-18 above. Note that executing SB 100 will be challenging (6)

Governor Brown has indicated he will be making an important announcement on Tuesday Sept 11.

Craig Miller is a leading science journalist in the Bay Area. He summarized the week’s outlook here (7)

There is a lot here. We still need to see what will happen by the end of the week. These are exciting times.
